Umpire Training

Curling Canada recognizes the need for a National Curling Umpire Certification Program. Accordingly, standard guidelines for the training and development of curling umpires who will be capable of officiating at provincial or national competitions have been developed.

There is a 5 level system developed:

Time Clock Operator/Observer Official

Complete registration and submit it to your Curling Canada Member Association
Complete the online self-taught Time Clock Operator Course
Complete the online self-taught Observe Couse
Complete the practical requirement of a minimum of six games of officiating experience under the supervision of a Level 3, 4, or 5 Chief Umpire at a CURLSASK or Curling Canada Canadian championship and receive a positive evaluation. Submit the completed The Clock Operator/Observe practical form to CURLSASK

Game Upire

Game Time Clock Operator/Observer Certification
Attend a Game Umpire Training Course (contact CURLSASK for dates and location of upcoming courses)
Complete and pass the Game Umpire exam (open book) with a 70% passing grade requirement
Complete the practical requirement of a minimum of 6 games total of Game Umpire experience at two CURLSASK championships under the supervision of Level 3, 4, or 5 Chief Umpires and receive positive evaluations

LEVEL 3 - CURLSASK Chief Umpire

Game Umpire Ceritication
Serve as Deputy Chief Umpire at a minimum of one CURLSASK Championship
Serve as Chief Umpire at a minimum of one CURLSASK Championship
Receive positive evaluations from CURLSASK Championship Committee Chair and a recommendation from a recognized CURLSASK Chief Umpire

LEVEL 4 - National Game Umpire, Deputy Chief Umpire & Chief Umpire

CURLSASK (or another MA) Chief Umpire
Recommended to Curling Canada by CURLSASK
Serves as Game Umpire at minimum of two Curling Canada arena-based championships and receive positive evaluation from the Chief Umpires

LEVEL 5 - National Chief Umpire

National Chief Umpire Certified
Serve as Chief Umpire at a minimum of two Curling Canada arena-based championships and receive positive evaluations from the Director, Championship Services.
