Mixed Doubles Added to Saskatchewan Winter Games!

CURLSASK is very excited to announce some very important updates and changes to our Saskatchewan Winter Games and Canada Winter Games Selection Processes.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games (SWG) are an important Multi-sport event that can play a significant role in helping prepare Saskatchewan’s developmental athletes, coaches, and officials for a higher level of competition. The SWG is developmental opportunity for curling and a key component of our Canada Winter Games Training Program.  The Saskatchewan Winter Games is held once every four years. The next SWG will be hosted February 20-26 2022.

Nine districts in Saskatchewan will host competitions to send one men’s team, one women’s and one mixed doubles team to the Games.

Mixed Doubles added to SWG

The 2022 Saskatchewan Winter Games will mark the debut for the Mixed Doubles Game. “We worked very hard to present a strong case for inclusion of Mixed Doubles, and are so excited to learn our application was approved. Over the past number of seasons, our U18 Mixed Doubles Provincials has had strong participation and we have watched U18 competitors place well against our adult teams in Mixed Doubles provincials.” said CURLSASK Executive Director Ashley Howard. “The Saskatchewan Winter Games are a once in a lifetime championship and now more Saskatchewan curlers will have that experience.”

At this time, we expect the boys and girls 4-person team play at the same time. The competitors in this category are to be a maximum of 16 years old on June 30th, 2021. This will allow us to run the Mixed Doubles on it’s own – therefore allowing competitors a chance to play in both championships. Mixed Doubles competitors will be aged a maximum of 18 years old on June 30, 2021. The ages between categories are staggered to allow more participants the opportunity to play.

Mixed Doubles added to CWG

We are also pleased to formally announce that the Canada Winter Games, will also see the debut for the Mixed Doubles format. The winning athletes in 4-person team play cannot compete in the CWG MD’s Trials; as they cannot play in both disciplines at Canada Winter Games. The age eligibility for Mixed Doubles at the Canada Winter Games is still to be determined.
