Team SK Blog #2 ~ Canadian Junior Curling Championships

Team SK

MEN

After a long wait all day, opening ceremonies took place at 6:30 pm at the George Preston Centre. This is a great venue to host this event. Just the right size which leads to a lot of high energy atmosphere. Finally we get to play. First game was against the Host Team BC. We came out on top and earned our cost win of the event.

We had many fans cheering that were by far the loudest in the rink. Team debrief tonight then sleep. We have two games tomorrow against Ontario at 9 am then Alberta at 2 pm.

Sunday morning started out with our second game against Ontario. We were successful in getting the win, but more important, we got to meet our Asham Junior Future Star, Eric W from Maple Ridge BC. Each team gets a junior future star assigned to their team which allows us to show Eric our pre game warm up and pre game practice and was the Sask flag bearer in the pre game introduction. Eric even spent the game sitting beside Coach Dean in the coaches box. After our game against Ontario it was a quick turn around for our 2 pm game against Alberta. So we had lunch at the parents hotel which is very close to the curling rink. After an 11 end battle with Alberta we came out on the short end with our first loss of the tourney. We then enjoyed a meal out with all of the parents, grandparents, uncles and friend. Back to the hotel with a short mission planning meeting to discuss tomorrow’s schedule and it is time for rest. Tomorrow we play BC at 2 pm.

WOMEN

Team Saskatchewan Junior Men’s and Women’s Teams arrived safely to Langley, BC!

The anticipation of attending the 2020 CJCC was prolonged due to delayed flights but we made the best of it with the great company of the men’s team and a friendly visit with Merlot and Frankie!

We started the tourney off Friday afternoon at the George Preston Recreation Centre with a win against Alberta, marched in by the Pipers Band for Opening Ceremonies and ending the evening with our second win over British Columbia.

Today we faced the Yukon with three players… unfortunately Paige is under the weather and Mary’s ankle needed a break. Thanks to Maddie for stepping in! We worked hard this afternoon and pulled out another win against the Yukon. We are currently sitting 3-0. Tomorrow we play at 9 am and take on the Northwest Territories. Paige and Mary have rested and are feeling well now and are ready to roll for tomorrow’s game!

The 2020 CJCC event has been fantastic! We have been treated like rock stars and the atmosphere has been electric! It’s been great playing on the arena ice and we love all the cheering from the stands from our Saskatchewan families and friends!
