CURLSASK Junior Men's & Women's Provincial Championships: Event Preview

CURLSASK Junior Men’s & Women’s Provincial Championships ~ Saskatoon, SK

The standard 12-team pool play format that has hit the Junior scene the past number of seasons here in Saskatchewan will be no more. For the first time the format for both the Junior Men’s & Women’s Provincial Championship will consists of an 8-team round robin.

CURLSASK & the volunteers of Saskatoon will be heading back to the Saskatoon Sutherland Curling Club to host this years championship, where the staff & team at the Sutherland provided an exceptional experience for all curlers one year ago! An exciting addition to this years event, will be the Live Broadcasting of the playoffs available hosted by Trevor Bothorel. You can catch the playoff action at the CURLSASK Facebook Page!

8 Men’s & 8 Women’s teams will have their eyes on the prize looking to represent Saskatchewan at the 2020 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, which will be held January 18-26 in Langley, British Columbia!

CURLSASK “End By End” Event Analysis

1st End ~ Team Rylan Kleiter have their eyes on capping off a junior career for the books! They will compete for their 4th straight provincial title, and look to improve on their bronze medal finish at last years New Holland Canadian Junior Championship.
2nd End ~ It was a busy season for junior teams on the Sask Men’s & Women’s Curling Tours, and was so nice to see our young stars take to the ice and gain some valuable experience. A total 16 junior teams competed at this years tour events around the province.
3rd End ~ 47 out of 64 competitors stepped onto the ice one year ago up at the Saskatoon Sutherland. Many familiar faces, but a few on different teams than used to. With defending champions on the women’s side, Rachel Erickson & Sarah Hoag joining new foursomes!
4th End ~ Curling Alberta Excel Cup welcomed a handful of Junior & U18 Saskatchewan Teams. This prestige competition is an invite only from the B.C., Alberta & Saskatchewan provinces! Members of Team Kleiter, Team Bernath, Team Pomedli, Team Ackerman & Team Kleiter were your 2019 Excel Cup Champions!
5th End ~ CURLSASK is excited to announce that we will be live broadcasting our playoff games up at the Saskatoon Sutherland, with special guest commentary! Check us out on the CURLSASK Facebook Page.
6th End ~ A bit of a hometown feeling will be amidst the air at the Sutherland Club. A combined 11 out of the 16 teams hail from Saskatoon, with 8 of them calling the Sutherland their home club.
7th End ~ As only four sheets of ice are needed to accompany the 8 Men’s & 8 Women’s teams for the week, additional “on-ice” seating will be available for spectators to enjoy!
8th End ~ Come join us for Opening Ceremonies the evening of December 27 @ 6pm at the Saskatoon Sutherland Curling Club! No admission fee!

Junior Men’s Teams

Team Rylan Kleiter ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Rylan & team will look to make it their fourth provincial title in a row! With the goal to take it one step further from the semi-final finish at last years New Holland Canadian Junior Championship!

Team Cody Sutherland ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Skip Cody & Lead Jack Reid welcome two new members to the team this year in Weyburn’s Landon Field & Regina’s James Hom. They claimed the second spot in Q-Spiel #1 down in Estevan!

Team Brecklin Gervais ~ Kronau
Canada Winter Games representatives Brecklin & second Andrew Myers join longtime teammates from Regina Brandon Myers & Michael Baumgartner. Brandon & Michael are look to make a run for it in their final year of eligibility.

Team Daymond Bernath ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Skip Daymond & lead Brayden Grindheim won the U18 Excel Cup out in Edmonton this past November. This team returns with the same lineup as one year ago, where they finished with a 4-1 record, losing to Brayden Stewart 6-5 in the quarterfinals.

Team Nathen Pomedli ~ Saskatoon Nutana
Nathen, Braeden & Ethan along with Coach Verne represented SK last year at the U18 National Championships. They welcome Mossbank’s Cole Macknak at second this year, claiming the first spot out of Q-Spiel #2 in Humboldt.

Team Gavin Steckler ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Skip Gavin & second Caid Brossart have lost the past two provincial finals to Team Kleiter. With Gavin moving up to skip, they will look to redeem themselves with additions in Dominic Neufeld & Sean Altman.

Team Josh Bryden ~ Regina Callie
Three of four members return to the lineup this season, where Josh & team added lead Ty Anaka also of Regina. Team Bryden grabbed a 6-2 win in the C-Qualifier game from Weyburn’s Team Labbie.

Team Matthew Drewitz ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Team Drewitz returned with a familiar lineup from one year ago, adding second Ethan Desilets. Drewitz & team attended the U18 Excel Cup in Okotoks, finishing with a 1-4 round robin record.

Junior Women’s Teams

Team Ashley Thevenot ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Ashley & team welcome last years provincial champion Rachel Erickson at third. These ladies have done some travelling over the past two seasons, competing in Alberta & Manitoba Junior events, along with many Sask Women’s Curling Tour Events. They claimed the first spot in Q-Spiel #1.

Team Skylar Ackerman ~ Saskatoon Nutana
Skylar skipped SK at the Canada Winter Games, and now has added last years U18 Champion Emily Haupstein & second Taylor Stremick of Regina. Skylar, Emily & Abbey Johnson captured the U18 Excel Cup in Edmonton this past November!

Team Amy Remeshylo ~ Saskatoon Granite
Amy stepped up as skip with teammate Sam Fowler aging out. Amy & longtime teammate Marlyse Steckler welcomed third Kelsey Sommerfeld & lead Kayla Kish to the team this year. The ladies claimed the third spot out of Q-Spiel #1 in Yorkton.

Team Kyla Thies ~ Regina Callie Curling Club
Kyla & thir Shantel Englot add a new front end to the mix in last years U18 Champion Emma Wiens & Regina’s Bailey Armstrong. Team Thies also competed on the Sask Women’s Tour this season at the Regina Callie Rocktoberfest & Saskatoon Nutana Spiel!

Team Krystal Englot ~ Regina Callie
A pair of two teammates from Team Englot & Team Stremick joined forces for the 19/20 season! Krystal & provincial mixed doubles champion Mackenzie Schwartz welcomed Cassidy Regush & two-time U18 Champion Kelly Kay to the team.

Team Jessica Farquharson ~ Yorkton
Team Farquharson will make their provincial junior debut, returning with their same U18 lineup where they finished with a 1-3 record at the Regina Callie last year. Team Farquharson earned the second spot in Q-Spiel #2 up in Tisdale.

Team Madison Kleiter ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Quarter-finalists one year ago, skip Madison Kleiter & the Kennedy twins at front end, welcome last years provincial junior champion Sarah Hoag at the third position. Kleiter & team defeated Team Johnson 9-3 in Q-Spiel #2.

Team Savanna Taylor ~ Saskatoon Sutherland
Team Taylor also made their provincial junior debut last year at the Saskatoon Sutherland, finishing with a 0-5 record in pool play. But this young team is back with the same lineup and will look to make some noise building on last years experience.
