Anderson Wins Viterra Scotties Women's Provincial Championship!
Anderson Defeats Silvernagle in Sundays Final
What a day it was Sunday at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, as the 2018 Viterra Scotties Women’s Provincial Championship came to a close. After a week of round robin play, we were finally able to crown our champions who will represent the green and white on the national stage!
Flashbacks of last years provincial championship in Melville seem to have taken place once again this year in Melfort, where we witnessed Team Penny Barker advance all the way through the tiebreaker game to win her first provincial title. But this year it was Sherry Anderson and her young team of Kourtney Fesser, Krista Fesser & Karlee Korchinski who had a week to remember!
Team Anderson finished the round robin in a three way tie with teams Stefanie Lawton & Penny Barker, but earned the third place spot with their round robin victories over both teams earlier in the week.
There, Anderson went on an unbelievable run, where they defeated defending champion Penny Barker, after needing two points in the 10th and final end to take the final 4-3. They then went on to face off against Regina’s Chantelle Eberle Sunday morning in the semi final, as this one needed an extra end with Anderson making a clutch nose hit double for the win.
The provincial final hit the ice at 5:00 p.m. Sunday night in front of one of the largest crowds all week at the Palace, and boy did the players not disappoint making it a final to remember!!
With Team Robyn Silvernagle of North Battleford receiving the bye to the final through their 1vs2 Page Playoff victory, along with the round robin win over Anderson (7-4) earlier in the week, could say that they had the edge heading into this final game. Silvernagle got out to a quick 4-2 lead, scoring multiple points each time their team had the hammer, but the difference maker was a steal in the 9th end for Anderson and the all important force in the 10th end to force this one into an extra end.
Third Kourtney Fesser for Team Anderson made the shot of the end clearing out the front with a double peel to pick the Silvernagle stone off of the button, leaving Sherry with a draw to the piece of the four foot for the exciting finish!!
Team Anderson will now represent Team Saskatchewan at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts beginning on January 27 in Penticton, British Columbia! Congratulations & Good Luck Ladies!
We also want to send a huge thank you to the City of Melfort, the Melfort Curling Club, the host committee, the volunteers & all other helping hands that made this years Viterra Scotties a smooth and well ran event from start to finish!
