2017 For the Love of Curling Scholarship Program
Thanks to the incredible generousity of the curling community, ten $1,000 scholarships are available again this year for young men and women pursuing their academic and athletic goals. As well, for the 2017 scholarship campaign only, there will be three additional scholarships – each worth $1,100 – made available to young female curlers, as a legacy of the remaining funds from the now-defunct Women’s World Curling Tour. Both of this past season’s Canadian junior champion skips are former recipients of the For the Love of Curling scholarships. Kristen Streifel, who won bronze for Canada at the 2017 World Juniors in Gangneung, South Korea, was awarded a scholarship in 2015 while Tyler Tardi, who lost a playoff tiebreaker in South Korea, was a recipient last year, as was his vice-skip Sterling Middleton. Another 2016 scholarship awardee, Maxime Blais, won a bronze medal with Northern Ontario at the 2017 Canadian Juniors in Victoria, while 2015 awardee Laura Masters also was a bronze-medalist at the 2017 Canadian Juniors with the Northern Ontario women’s team. All of the recipients were able to accomplish amazing things, on and off the ice. The support from curlers across Canada is what makes all the difference for these determined athletes as they strive to achieve their academic and curling dreams come true. We are very grateful to everyone who contribute to this program, as are the students! Please find attached the application and eligibility requirements to share with students in your province. Curling Canada Competitor Travel Costs Review Summary
Curling Canada’s Business Model Review Committee has determined that covering 100% of all travel and accommodation costs for teams to attend Canadian Championship is no longer sustainable so they have implemented some changes. An explanation of the rationale is here:
Curling Canada Competitor Travel Costs Review
For Saskatchewan, this will mean that an average of 80% to 85% of Team Saskatchewan’stravel costs will still be covered for the Canadian Juniors, Mixed, Seniors and Wheelchair events. The Scotties will remain unaffected, but support of the Brier will no longer include the costs for a 5th player. CURLSASKunderstands these reductions were necessary and is looking into other sources of funding such as out-of-province travel grants to be able to complement Curling Canada’s support of Team Saskatchewan for all of these events.
