We want to thank all the helping hands from the Estevan community for putting on such a wonderful event for all players &spectators to enjoy! Let us take a look at the results from over the weekend.
Men's Club Championship
The men began a round robin play (2 pools of 6 teams) Friday afternoon, with the top two teams from each pool moving on to the playoff round Sunday morning. In one pool, we saw a tight battle between three teams who ended up tied for top spot at 4-1 records. Teams Brent Gedak, Sheldon Obst, and Shane Vollman all split wins amongst each other, setting up a tiebreaker game between the Gedak and Vollman rinks. This one was a great matchup with teams trading deuces and singles all game long leading to a 5-5 tie heading into the extra end. Where it was Gedak with the last stone advantage and used that to score his single and book his squad a spot into the semi finals against Christopher Mass. In the other men’s pool, the Mass rink (5-0) and the Brad Kennedy rink (4-1) finished a top of their pool and found themselves a semi final spot heading into Sunday mornings action!
Once playoffs rolled around, it was the Gedak rink (defeated Mass in the semi final 8-5) and the Obst rink (defeated Kennedy 4-2 in the semi final), who met up Sunday afternoon for the provincial title. A relatively low scoring game as the first four ends resulted in blank ends, followed up by teams trading singles heading into the 8th end. But it was Gedak with that last stone advantage and using it to score his two points and claim a 3-2 victory securing that provincial title! Congratulations to Team Gedak!
Women's Club Championship
Meanwhile on the women’s side of things, the teams made it a little more difficult on themselves to find a spot into the playoffs on Sunday. After pool play concluded, it was a tiebreaker like no other to confirm the final two teams into the semi finals. In the first tiebreaker game, we saw a convincing win for the Rebecca Ryde rink (Saskatoon) 7-1 over the Lindsay Huish rink (Gainsborough), moving her onto the second tiebreaker game against Kristi Frolek (North Battleford), where it was Frolek taking this one by a score of 6-3 booking her a ticket into the semi final game. In the third tiebreaker game, it was the Heather Burnett rink (Martensville) losing a close match to Elaine Osmachenko (Moose Jaw) 6-5 in the final end, allowing Osmachenko a spot in the other semi final.
After the mess of tiebreakers, the semi finals were set with Osmachenko scoring four points in the final two ends to defeat Lisa Wyatt (Lumsden) to earn her a spot into the provincial final. In the other semi, it was Frolek taking on the hometown squad in Alexandra Williamson, where it was Frolek scoring two three end scores to secure her an 8-3 win.
The provincial final began a little later than expected with the few extra games, but it got off to an exciting start with the score all locked up at 3-3 after the 5th end. Frolek responded nicely with a deuce in the 7th end followed up by a steal in the final end of play to crown them as provincial champions! Congratulations to Team Kristi Frolek!
