Day One Results:
Laycock vs. Armstrong – The top seed in Team Steve Laycock faced off with Team Ryan Armstrong from Lashburn in this afternoons draw, with Laycock getting out to a quick 5-1 lead after a few last rock draws to secure a few extra point ends. And they did not look back taking it 9-3.
B. Heidt vs. Gedak –A great back and forth game between the two rinks in the opener, saw Heidt make a fantastic in off double which lead to a score of two points, and ended up stealing the win after Gedak was forced to make a tough triple for the win on his final rock in the 10th.
Jacobson vs. Deis –This one was all tied up heading into the 5th end break, with teams trading single points leading to a 2-2 tie. Deis having to remove Jacobsons open stone in the back twelve foot to run him out of rocks in the 10th and take the 5-3 win.
Scharback vs. Hartung –Hartung got off to a quick start scoring a deuce right out of the gate. Scharback then left with a very bad break attempting a hit against two where the rock picks up some debri, ending up in a steal of two. Teams then flip flopped deuces leading Hartung to the 8-4 victory after 8 ends.
Casey vs. Bitz –Adam Casey making his debut at a Saskatchewan Men’s Provincial Championship joining the Shaun Meachem rink came out with a victory over Scott Bitz this evening, after scoring a huge score of three in the 9th end to make the final 7-3 after 9 ends of play.
Ackerman vs. deConinck Smith –This game was an interesting one with teams trading big ends at crucial times of the game. But it was Ackerman in the 10th with a nice hit and stick for his deuce to take this to an extra end. deConinck Smith left with a pick on his last stone and makes it for the 9-8 win.
D. Heidt vs. Bryden –This one was all locked up heading into the 5th end break at 2-2, but Heidt with his last in the 7th end made a nice delicate tap and roll for his two followed by a steal of one that lead to the 5-4 win over Bryden.
Korte vs. Craig –A tough night for the #2 Seed in Bruce Korte after giving up an early 6-0 lead to Dale Craig. Korte did show life making a game out of itonly down two coming home, but it was Craig taking this one with an 8-7 finish and the win.
Heidt Name a Familiar One in SaskTel Provincial Tankard
The Heidt name has a familiar ring to it when it comes to competing at the SaskTel Tankard Men’s Provincial Championship in the past few years. Last year all four Heidt’s competed out in Kindersley for the 2016 Championship, but this year things look a little bit different. A year ago, it was father Brad skipping his two sons Drew and Mitch while his other son Josh skipped his own rink. Here in Tisdale, Brad now skips his men’s team (who also won the senior provincial title last year) and have won their opening game to Brent Gedak in a 10th end thriller that forced a miss out of Gedaks final rock triple attempt. Drew Heidt now skips his own team out of the North Battleford Twin Rivers Curling Club who picked up a win ina tough match to Randy Bryden this evening 6-4. Then there is Josh Heidt, who left his squad from last year to join with the Hartung duo in Kody and Tyler along with Kelly Knapp out of the Saskatoon Nutana Curling Club, who won this afternoon 8-4 against fellow Saskatoon rink Brady Scharback.
Draw 3 begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. at the Tisdale RECplex.
