The Saskatchewan Men’s SCT Tour season got underway this past weekend in Saskatoon at the Nutana Curling Club. Sixteen of the top men’s teams battled throughout the weekend looking for that first place finish and the first spot into the Provincial Tankard Championship.
On the Men’s spiel circuit, the winner of each SCT Event will gain a direct berth into the Provincial Championship. With the stakes on the line, great shot making ability, and fantastic ice conditions, there was not shortage of close and intensified games all weekend long!
Six teams qualified for the Sunday playoff round, which saw Drew Heidts foursome advance to the first semi final with a final end score to defeat Ryan Deis 6-5. The Bruce Korte team faced off against Team deConinck Smith which again Korte needed a single in the eighth end to break the tie and advance to the semi final. Both semi finals had convincing wins for both Korte (deafeated Aaron Shutras rink 8-1), and for McKee (defeated Heidt 9-4).
The final showdown brought in two very experienced teams who have members that represented our province at many different national competitions! But it was Korte who broke open the game with a huge score of three in the second end, and a steal of two in the fifth end to take home a 6-3 championship win. Korte, who dropped his first two games of the weekend, rallied off five straight wins to take home the title and provincial berth!
Congratulations to all teams and what a start to the Saskatchewan Men’s Tour season!
Next SCT Spiel is this upcoming weekend at the Regina Highland Curling Club.
