The 2016 Rocktoberfest Women’s Curling Spiel was hosted this past weekend by the Regina Callie Curling Club, and was the second stop on the Sask Women’s Curling Tour.
14 women’s teams from around the province battled throughout the weekend to gain valuable tour points for the upcoming season.
Once playoff Sunday rolled around, Penny Barker (coming out of a tiebreaker game) won her quarter final game against the Mandy Selzer rink 7-2, who came up against Kim Schneider in the semi final. A back and forth match-up all game long, saw the girls come down to the last end with Schneider taking the victory 9-8 and to move into the championship final.
On the other side of the playoff bracket, we saw Nancy Martin defeat Rae Ann Williamson 6-2 in the quarter finals, leading to a match-up against the newly developed team in Breanne Meakin. Again a back and forth battle between the two teams came down to the final end, with Nancy Martin counting a single point in the eighth end to seal the victory 6-4.
The championship final witnessed Team Schneider jump out to a huge 6-0 lead after the fourth end break and looking to run away with this one. But the Nancy Martin foursome came out after the break firing at all cylinders and responding with six straight points of their own to tie it all up. But in the final end, it was Team Schneider that scored the single to win their second straight Sask Women’s Tour Event of the season.
Next stop on the Sask Women’s Curling Tour: Nov.4 – Nov.6, 2016 at the Carlyle Curling Club.
