Team Sask Shines at National Competitions
Saskatchewan teams were on medal podiums this past weekend at three national competitions.
The Mitchell Dales team based out of Wadena claimed the Gold Medal at the Optimist U18 International Championship in Edmonton. The team was undefeated throughout the competition but needed an extra end victory over Quebec in the Final game. The Saskatchewan women’s team led by Rachel Erickson from Maryfield finished 7th in the fourteen team competition.
Sherry Anderson’s Senior Women’s team arrived home from Digby, Nova Scotia with a Silver Medal after going all the way through to Saturday’s Final game versus an old nemesis – the Colleen Jones Team Nova Scotia from Halifax. Playing at the 2016 Everest National Seniors with Patti Hersikorn, Brenda Goertzen and Anita Silvernagle, the Nutana based team could not get past the team that was once World Champions. Anderson’s team had pulled through an extremely tight semi-final game against Team Ontario – skipped by Joanne Rizzo from Sherry Middaugh’s team, to advance to the Gold Medal Game. Kerrobert’s Brad Heidt finished 7th in the Men’s field.
The combination of Dustin Kalthoff and Marliese Kasner had an outstanding weekend at the National Mixed Doubles in Saskatoon. After playing a 7 game round robin, they advanced to the Championship round of 16. The duo made it to the semi-finals before dropping that game to the combination of Geoff Walker and Laura Crocker. An injury to the Emma MIskew/Ryan Fry team that lost their semi-final to Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman did not permit the Bronze Medal game and as such Dustin and Marliese were awarded the Bronze Medal. Peterman and Gallant went on to claim the Gold Medal.
