First for Anderson, Third for Heidt
The Affinity Credit Union 2016 Senior Men’s and Women’s titles were claimed in North Battleford this past weekend. Winning Green Jackets were the Sherry Anderson and Brad Heidt teams from the Saskatoon Nutana and Kerrobert Curling Clubs.
This is the first senior’s title for Sherry and her team of Patty Hersikorn, Brenda Goertzen and Anita Silvernagle. They defeated Joan McCusker’s Regina Callie team consisting of Jan Betker, Cathy Arnold and Marcia Gudereit 8-5 in the Championship Final. The McCusker squad had earned a direct spot to the Final based on finishing first in the 8 team round robin with a 6-1 record. The Anderson team with their 5-2 record needed to wait for a tie break game between Lorraine Arguin and defending champion Cathy Inglis to see who would be their opponent. Inglis emerged as the winner from that Saturday evening game but would then fall to the Anderson team 6-5 in the semi-final.
The men’s title was decided on Sunday morning as tie breakers were not required. Randy Gilewich, Darrell McKee and Brad Heidt all finished with 5-2 records. Using the cumulative Draw Shot Distance results, it was determined that Regina Highland team of Gilewich, Jamie Schneider, Rick Schneider and Shannon England finished first meaning that McKee and Heidt would face off in Saturday evening’s semi-final. Heidt went on to defeat Nutana’s McKee crew of Mark Lane, Tony Korol and Rod Antonichuk 4-2 to set up the Sunday morning tilt.
Heidt and lead Dan Ormsby were chasing their third Affinity Senior title while teammates Mark Lang and Glenn Heitt were striving for their first senior title. In a close back and forth game, it came down to Heidt putting his last rock on the button for the 5-4 victory and the provincial title.
The 2016 Canadian Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships will be held in Digby, Nova Scotia from March 28 to April 4, 2016. The Canadian winners will then go on to represent Canada at the World Seniors Championships in Lethbridge, AB in mid-April, 2017.
