Undefeated at 2016 SaskTel Tankard Championships
Without appearing to really break a sweat, the Steve Laycock team from the Nutana Club in Saskatoon, plied their trade in a steady workmanlike fashion at the 2016 SaskTel championship in Kindersley. The six straight wins in the Saskatchewan Men’s Championship earned the team a third straight Saskatchewan title, a trip to the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier and a sixth green jacket for the skip Steve Laycock.
The team’s steady performance, and the inability for most of the opponents to apply any severe pressure, saw the team handle the superb club ice and rocks at Kindersley in a very professional manner. In fact, the team was never down on the scoreboard. They suffered through a few ends of tied scores but that was the most adversity they faced all week. Laycock, along with Kirk Muyres, Colton Flasch and Dallan Muyres only gave up one stolen end in the entire competition.
The Tankard Final saw the end to the six game rally the Shaun Meachem team put together as they aspired to achieve their green jackets. Shaun, along with first year teammates Catlin Schneider, Brady Scharback and Aaron Shutra found themselves deep in the C event on Friday morning. A string of wins placed them into the Page playoffs on Saturday evening. The team defeated Josh Heidt 6-1 in the 3-4 game and then put away Brent Gedak 6-4 in Sunday morning’s semi-finals. The Meachem squad came up against the Laycock juggernaut but could not find the means to finish them off. An early 3-0 deficit was too much for the Swift Current Curling Club team to overcome as the Laycock crew finished off the game with a 6-4 victory.
Team Laycock will be looking to improve upon their 2015 Bronze Medal performance at last year’s Brier. They will now compete at the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa from March 5-13, 2016.
