CURLSASK’s Celebration of Curling Day in Saskatchewan
A project that has been the dream of the SCA Legends committee goes live January 27th, 2016 to celebrate Curling Day in Saskatchewan.
The CURLSASK Legends of Curling site is a new and refreshed viewing gallery of Saskatchewan’s most decorated curlers, coaches, builders and media supporters. The site is a show case for all who enjoy discovering or re-living Saskatchewan’s storied curling history while being user friendly, simple to navigate and providing more information on the inductees than the original site.
The Legends of Curling Honour Roll eternalizes the memory of those who have brought honour and distinction to curling in Saskatchewan. It is the intention of the Legends Committee to honour the talents of Saskatchewan’s curling athletes and builders of the game as well as outstanding supporters and local legends. All facets of the Province’s Official Sport are eligible for recognition.
The Honour Roll was the dream of Tom Naylen from Maryfield. Tom had always envisioned that there should be a way of honouring veteran curlers and volunteers in the province who have not been recognized on the National Podiums or Halls of Fame. He was the driving force in developing ‘The SCA Legends of Curling Honour Roll” and in 2004 his dream was unveiled as a Legacy of the SCA’s 100th Anniversary. Tom served as chairman of the committee from 2004 until retirement in 2008.
In 2004, the inaugural year of the Legends Committee, all Saskatchewan’s teams that had won a national title were inducted to launch the Honour Roll. Following that year, all teams that win a national title are automatically inducted. In 2005 categories such as Builder, Media and Coach were created to recognize others who were essential to the development of the sport.
Curling Day in Saskatchewan is the perfect day to take a few moments and scroll through Saskatchewan’s celebrated curlers and contributors. Enjoy! The CURLSASK Legends of Curling The site may be access from the CURLSASK website under the Member Services heading.
Many thanks to Glenn Van Gulik from Curling Canada for the technical assistance to create this site and Shirley Stefanson from the CURLSASK office for all the work to organize and populate the site. The Legends committee is in good hands with Jerry Shoemaker at the helm along with other SCA Past Presidents Liane McLean, Janeth Muldoon, Del Jones and Barry Whitehouse and staff member Shirley Stefanson.
