From Team Vollman in Ottawa
Hello Everyone in Sask!
The day we have been looking forward to since the end of March has finally arrived. When we won the Saskatchewan Championship in March, the end of November for the national event seemed to be a long way off. However, the end of November is finally here.
Tonight was the opening gala. We had the opportunity to meet many of the other teams competing, and many of the members of the Ottawa Hunt & Golf Club. The club seems beautiful. Jean-Michel Ménard also addressed the room at the event. He spoke about his opportunities to put on his provincial colours, and his Brier appearances. One of the fun moments was his recollection of the 2006 Brier, which he won in Regina. Many of the members of our team, and our fans, were in attendance at that game, and we shared some memories of that too.
One of the early highlights of the event, which may stay at or near the top spot all week, came when we checked-in yesterday. We received our Saskatchewan jackets and shirts! I still find it hard to believe that we have our names on Saskatchewan jackets. This is also the first year where the event is a full Curling Canada event. Which means they now hand out hearts, like they do for many of the other Curling Canada events (for example, Purple Hearts for the Brier). We now can say we have won Grey Hearts.
Tomorrow marks the first day that we will step on to the ice. We have practice in the morning, and then we play Nova Scotia in our first game Monday afternoon (3PM Eastern; 2PM in Sask). Everyone please cheer hard, and thanks for everyone’s support!
