Newkirk and Vollman Win First Titles
Teams representing the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre and the Regina Highland Curling Club won Provincial Travelers Club Championship titles at the Nutana Club this past weekend. In an interesting twist, the reigning 2014 Canadian Club Champion is Kory Kohuch from Nutana who is also the General Manager of the Nutana Club. Along with teammate Dave Schmirler, they hosted 32 teams from all across the province participating in this social, but competitive, event. In an attempt to keep the spirit alive of a Club Curler Championship, the national rules state that the defending provincial winners (let alone the national winner!) must step back for one year before competing again. Additionally, only one player on a team may be of provincial competitive caliber.
The Highland Curling Club will once again be sending a team to the National Championships in November, 2015. The Jana Tisdale team from that Regina club was the 2014 Women’s Saskatchewan winners. Now, the Highland club will have the Men’s banner hanging there as a result of an extra end 7-6 Team Shane Vollman win over Unity’s Team Lloyd Fell. Playing with Shane is Kevin Fetsch, Garry Janz and Bob Sonder. Fell was joined by Curtis Bowker, Keith Schell and Kevin Leeson. Vollman had reached the Finals by defeating one time Saskatchewan Club Champion winner Cory Martens from Martensville in a 6-5 nail biter that saw Vollman take 2 points in the eighth end for the win. Fell had an equally tough semi-final game against Jim Nikolesjin from Weyburn needing an extra end for that victory.
The Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre is also no stranger to having a Club Championship banner as Patricia Yeske had won a title in 2011. The Candace Newkirk Team will now have another banner for the club to display. Candace, along with teammates Tina Hill, Caitlin Corbin and Rebecca Fowler will be wearing Green Jackets in Ottawa in November at the National Club Championships. The Newkirk crew had to get by an experienced Laurie Ell’s Highland Club team to earn the 5-3 victory. Laurie plays with Melanie McNeil, Jan Weppler and Terrie Hoffman. In the semi-finals Newkirk defeated Patricia Yeske, now from Prince Albert while Ell defeated Nicole Beausoleil from Twin Rivers North Battleford.
The Hunt Club in Ottawa will host the 2015 National Travelers Club Championship from November 23-29, 2015.
