Teams Kleiter, Anderson and Beaulieu all 2015 Champions
Twenty four teams of curlers aged 17 and under took to the ice on March 19th to win one of the three titles available at the 2015 Ramada Juvenile Championships. Up for grabs was either the Men’s, the Women’s or Open titles with 8 teams earning the right to play by claiming their region title earlier in March.
In the Open category an extra end was required before Debden’s Team Desiree Beaulieu was able to defeat the Ashley Thevenot team from St. Front with a 6-5 score. Playing with Desiree were Cole Aarrestad, Juli Gustafson and Sam Wascase and they were coached by Monica Svendsen. Joining Ashley was Ethan Kish, Brayden Kirkland, Jasmine Horn along with coach Scott Sunderland. In the Open category, any combination of males or females may form a team.
In the Women’s category, Team Hanna Anderson from Hanley held off the defending Championship Kaitlyn Jones team from Regina. After surviving a potentially game ending 5 ender from the Jones team in the sixth end by escaping with a steal of 1 point instead, the Anderson team peeled their way home in the final end of a tie game to provide Hanna with a draw to the 12 foot for the 5-4 win. Team Anderson includes Amanda Waterfield, Madison Martin, Payton Worth and Coach Natal Laycock. Team Jones includes Sara England, Shantel Hutton and Rayann Zerr and Coach Clint Krismer.
The Men’s side also saw the defending champion Brayden Stewart Team from Maryfield attempt to repeat as Juvenile title holders. However, with some sharp shooting in the 8th end from Skip Rylan Kleiter from Saskatoon’s Sutherland Club, Team Kleiter took 2 points in the 8th end for a 5-4 victory. Teammates are Trevor Johnson, Josh Mattern, Matthieu Taillon and Coach Dean Kleiter. Team Stewart consisted of Brayden, Branden McMullin, Derrick Kay, Carrick Friesen and Coach Barb Swallow.
Winners of the Men’s and Women’s Divisions are now able to represent Saskatchewan at the Optimist U18 International Competition in Edmonton. The teams begin competing April 1, 2015 and the competition concludes on April 5th, 2015.
