Up and Down Thursday
Blog 7 – Team SK from Fifth Player “Smiling” Gerry Adam
Good Morning from Calgary! Needless to say we had quite an emotional up and down day yesterday! Had the usual morning off; went out for breakfast in the morning then headed down to play our friend Ben Hebert and team Alberta.
Got off to a bit of a slow start being down 3-2 playing the 5th end and got into a bit of a mess in the 5th end. It looked like we were going to give up maybe a 7 or 8 ender but we dodged a bullet and only gave up one and went into the 5th end break.
Dodging that bullet got us going into the second half and we were ended up being only one down coming home with last rock. The boys set it up really good and Skipper Steve made an incredible double on his last shot to win the game! Derek Boe said it reminded him of the shot that Gerald Shymko made in the 99 Brier on Saskatchewan Day when the busloads of people came from Saskatoon to watch the games. Although I recall Derek napping in the front row after one to many “smiling gerry’s” on the bus ride in!
Again we had a quick turn around in-between games had just had time to run out for a quick bite to eat. We were back quickly to get ready for Team Ontario. It was a bit of a cautious start to the game and Ontario had made 4 or 5 doubles in the first five ends and the score was 1-1 at the half. We forced them in six to one point then scored a big 3 ender in 7 to take a 4-2 lead heading into 8. Coming home on the 8th end we had one of those ends that every team has once in a while; we four chances in a row to make a double and just couldn’t pull it off and Ontario scored a big 5! Everyone thought the game was over but the resilient boys from Saskatchewan managed to take one in 9 and steal two in 10 to force the extra end. In the extra Team Ontario’s second man made a double peel and took two stones out of the rings to leave it wide open. In the end the Ontario skipper had an open hit for the win.
Friday morning sets up for a huge game for us! If we win we are into the ¾ game and if we lose we are into probably a 4 way tie breaker for fourth spot in the playoffs. We play Jim Cotter from BC which will be a very tough match. The boys attitude after the loss to Ontario was very good and they are ready to come out firing on all cylinders this morning.
Great to see all the green in the Saddle dome; your support is appreciated and I think we have has many fans as the Alberta teams.
Thanks for the support back home; cheer hard!”
