Streifel and Hersikorn are Junior Champions
Kristen Streifel Wins Women’s Title
Both teams that won titles this weekend at the provincial championships in Humboldt are no strangers to the M&M Junior National competition. Of the eight curlers that won this weekend only Hayley Unrau, Haylee Jameson and Cole Tenetuik will be making their first trip to play for the Canadian title. The other 5 players have 9 combined previous appearances on the national stage.
Demonstrating the experience of two previous Junior titles and two Juvenile provincial titles, Kristen Streifel along with teammates Karlee Korchinski, Hayley Unrau and Haylee Jameson moved confidently through the CURLSASK Junior Women’s Provincial Championship in Humboldt. The team finished with a 4-1 record in the round robin placing them in the Page System 1-2 game against Regina’s Kaitlyn Jones. A victory in that game secured a place in the Championship Final where the team met Saskatoon’s Jessica Mitchell. Mitchell moved into the Final with a semi-final win over Jones in dramatic fashion when a close game broke open in the 8th end when Jones’ final stone picked giving up a steal of 5 points. In the Final, Streifel got off to a fast start with a 3 ender and then a steal to take control of the game and a final score of 9-5. The team now travels to Cornerbrook, Newfoundland for the 2015 M&M Junior Nationals January 24th – February 1st.

Jake Hersikorn Take Junior Men’s Title
In similar fashion on the women’s side, the Jake Hersikorn team moved decisively through round robin play demonstrating their experience from previous provincial championships. Hersikorn was undefeated throughout the round robin but met with a tough challenge against the Rylan Kleiter team in the Page 1-2 game. Hersikorn prevailed 6-5 in ten ends knocking Kleiter to the semi-final game against Saskatoon’s Chad Lang. Kleiter broke the semi game open in the sixth end when Lang rolled out leaving Kleiter with a steal of 3 points. Kleiter went on to win 10-4 setting up an all Saskatoon Sutherland men’s Final game.
The tables turned for Kleiter in the Men’s Final when Hersikorn executed a big weight in-off hit to smudge a Kleiter counter off the four foot for a first end score of 3 points. Kleiter facing three in the second was just heavy on the draw giving up a steal of 3 points in the second end and insurmountable 6-0 lead. The game ended after 6 ends with a final score of 10-3. The team will now join the junior women’s team and move on to the M&M Junior Nationals in Cornerbrook, NL.
