In a tale of two curling games, Lana Vey overcame a strong start by the young junior team of Kristen Streifel to steal away the Rocktoberfest 2014 championship title. In the first four ends Streifel’s team could do no wrong as the Vey team struggled a little bit early in the game finding guard and draw weight. However, Vey’s experience at staying patient paid off as a steal of 1 point in the crucial sixth tightened the score to 4-3 and turned the momentum in Vey’s favour. Vey stole 2 points in the seventh to take the lead into the last end. The final score was 8-4 as Vey stole 3 on a desperation shot by Streifel to attempt to score the tying point.
Vey is accompanied by third Alexandra Williamson, second Natalie Bloomfield and lead Ashley Williamson. The Vey team now has 15 points and the lead on the SWCT tour after earning 10 points for this win. Streifel plays with Saskatoon Nutana clubmates Haylee Jameson, Hailey Unrau and Karlee Korchinski.
Vey defeated Saskatoon’s Jessica Hanson in a rematch of the Nutana bonspiel’s semi final while Streifel defeated Jolene Campbell’s Swift Current based team in the other semi final.
On the Men’s side, the Final was over before you could blink as Randy Bryden’s team made fast work of Jamie Schneider’s squad.
Bryden is backed by third Troy Robinson, second Kelly Knapp and lead Trent Knapp. Kelly rejoins the team after taking two years off for university studies. Previously Trent had been the second but had played lead while Kelly’s replacement Brennan Jones played the second stones. Upon Kelly’s return, the team decided to have Kelly step directly into the second position as Trent had been playing well at lead. The decision definitely paid off in their first competition of the season.
The Schneider squad, while changing last year who tosses the last stone, remains intact with Rick Schneider throwing fourth stones while Jamie calls the game as third. Long time teammates Shannon and Curt England make up the front end.
Schneider defeated Jason Ackerman in the one semi final while Bryden defeated defending champion Scott Bitz in the other semi final.
The next SCT and SWCT tour stops are both in Moose Jaw with play beginning Friday evening October 24th and concluding Sunday, October 26th, 2014.
