Saskatoon’s Jill Shumay scored a single in the final end to edge Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon 8-7 in the Championship Final Sunday at the SaskPower Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Balgonie. Shumay along with third, Kara Johnston, Taryn Holtby and lead Jinaye Ayrey will now represent Saskatchewan at the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kingston, Ontario February 16-24, 2013.
Shumay only suffered one loss during the tournament losing to Lawton in the Page Playoff A1 vs B1 game Saturday night 5-4 but rebounded with a win in the semi-final Sunday afternoon over a rolling Amber Holland foursome, 8-3 to advance into the final.
It was Lawton’s third straight loss in the Championship Final losing to Holland two years ago and to Michelle Englot last year.
Holland defeated Chantelle Eberle 11-6 in the A2 vs B2 Page Playoff Saturday night before losing to Shumay in the semi-final. Up to then Holland was on a five game winning streak after winning her final two round-robin gamesand two tie-breakers before beating Eberle.
Lawton finished in first place in the “A” pool with a 5-0 record while Shumay was first in the “B” pool also at 5-0 to advance to the first page playoff game. Eberle finished in second place in the “A” pool to advance into the second page playoff game however tie-breakers were needed to decide the “B” pool playoff berth. Holland, Trish Paulsen and Englot all finished the round-robin with 3-2 records. Englot was awarded the berth into the second tie-breaker due to the lowest aggregate distance from the last-shot-draw that determined hammer in each round-robin game. Holland then played Paulsen in the first tie-breaker which Holland won 5-2. Holland then faced Englot Saturday afternoon and won that tie-breaker 6-3 moving Holland into the second page playoff.
